Teaching Faith Through Fun

Easter has always been special to me, especially when I think back to my childhood. Every year, we couldn’t wait for the weekend to come, filled with family, fun, and traditions that made lasting memories. The magic of Easter wasn’t just about the candy or gifts—it was about the time spent with loved ones, the joy of being together, and the simple, fun activities that brought us closer. And, of course, at the heart of it all was the reminder of the love, sacrifice, and hope that Easter brings.

The Easter Egg Hunt

One of my favorite Easter memories as a child was the egg hunt. We were always so excited, eagerly waiting for the hunt to start. Every year, my parents would hide chocolate eggs around the yard, and we’d race to find them, laughing and seeing who could find the most. The thrill of discovering an egg hidden in the grass or behind a tree never got old, and finding those sweet treats always felt like a little victory.

This fun tradition reminded me, in a simple way, of the joy that comes from searching and finding. It’s a lot like the deeper meaning of Easter—the joy of discovering hope and new life through Jesus’ resurrection. Just as we eagerly searched for eggs, Easter reminds us of the greatest gift of all: the gift of life through Christ.

Coloring Eggs in Springtime Shades

Another tradition I always looked forward to at Easter was decorating eggs. My twin sister and I would sit around the kitchen table, each with a cup of bright dye and a brush, ready to color our eggs with fun, spring colors. The process was so much fun—dipping the eggs into the food colouring dye with spoons, watching the colors change, and trying to make the prettiest designs. It wasn’t just about making beautiful eggs; it was about spending time together, laughing, and chatting as we worked. The table would be covered in colorful eggs, and we’d proudly display them around the house.

These eggs, each one so different, always reminded me of the new life that Easter brings. Just like the eggs changed with the dye, Easter is a time to remember how Christ’s resurrection gives us new beginnings, renewing our hearts and giving us hope for the future.

Easter Coloring Contest

Of course, no Easter would have been complete without our yearly Easter coloring contest. We’d each get a fresh batch of coloring sheets with Easter-themed designs—bunnies, flowers, baskets, and eggs. We’d pour our creativity into each drawing, making sure to use all the colors we had. The friendly competition between my sister and me was always a highlight, as we each tried to outdo one another with our colorful masterpieces. At the end of the day, we’d proudly present our drawings to our parents, who would graciously judge them and declare a winner—though, in truth, everyone’s artwork was celebrated and loved.

As we colored our Easter pictures, I can now see how the act of creating something beautiful together reflected the way God has painted our lives with grace and love. Each of us, with our unique talents and perspectives, brings something special to the table, much like how Christ invites us into His family, each one of us cherished and valuable.

A Time for Togetherness and Faith

Looking back on those Easter memories, what stands out the most is the feeling of family and togetherness. Our traditions weren’t fancy or expensive, but they were full of love, connection, and faith. The laughter during egg hunts, the fun of coloring eggs, and the quiet moments spent decorating them all came together to create beautiful memories that I still treasure. And through it all, the true meaning of Easter—the love and sacrifice of Jesus—was always there, gently present in our family time.

Thinking about those simple, happy moments, I’m reminded of how important family traditions are. They don’t have to be big or perfect to make a lasting impact. It’s the love, the time spent together, and the small moments that make them so meaningful. At its core, Easter is about renewal, joy, and connection—values that show up in the way we celebrate with those we love. Through these traditions, we were reminded of the greatest story ever told: how Christ’s resurrection brings us the hope of new life and forgiveness.

Even though our childhood traditions may have changed over time, the heart of Easter is still the same—a time to gather, laugh, and make memories that reflect God’s love and the promise of new life.
